Since ancient mariners first arrived in Gibraltar in the eighth century BCE, the “Rock” has been home to a diverse multitude of civilisations including Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Muslims.
More recently, the current British Overseas Territory has lived under Spanish sovereignty and has welcomed a heterogeneous community of people with different cultural backgrounds including Genoese, Maltese, Moroccan, Jewish, Indian and Portuguese. Today, it is a richly multicultural society with a fascinating heritage, and one of southern Europe’s most popular tourist destinations.
