A top-level meeting held in Brussels today to conclude an agreement on Gibraltar’s status within the European Union and Schengen travel area has been described as constructive and productive.
In an official statement following the talks, the Gibraltar government said, “Discussions took place in a constructive atmosphere, with significant progress achieved. General political lines have been agreed, including on airport, goods and mobility. Negotiations will continue over the coming weeks to conclude the E.U.-U.K. agreement.”
The meeting – the first in this format – involved European Commission executive vice-president Maroš Šefčovič, Spanish foreign minister José Manuel Albares, U.K, Foreign Secretary David Cameron and Gibraltar chief minister Fabian Picardo.
“The participants agreed that this was a productive day. The meeting reaffirmed their shared commitment to concluding an E.U.-U.K. agreement to secure the future prosperity of the whole region. This agreement will bring confidence, legal certainty and stability to the lives and livelihoods of the people of the whole region, without prejudice to the parties’ legal positions.”
